Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

-5 YEARS LATER-

“Dr. Cohen, this is turning into a real problem... Dr. Cohen? Dr. Cohen, are you listening to me?”

I was looking down at my work beeper lighting up as a hand waved over it. I shook my head to reel back into reality and the drowning voice of Lucy's private school dean filled my ears.

“I'm so sorry.” I apologized as I stuffed my beeper back into the pant pocket of my scrubs. “I'm late for work. They really need me. I'm gonna have to cut this short.”

“I understand that work is important, Dr. Cohen, but so is your daughter's attitude. I'm not sure where she's picked up the sarcasm, but it's something you need to sit down and discuss as a family.”

I rolled my eyes as I took a step to the side. Over the dean's shoulder I watched Lucy happily parade into the building as she waved goodbye. I blew her a kiss and waved back.

“Can you blame her? She's Jewish and her dad is Jonah Cohen.” I jokingly laughed, but the dean didn't find it funny. “Look, so long as both those things are in the equation she's just always going to be a ball of witty remarks. I'm sorry.”

I reached into my purse and pulled out a half eaten bagel. It was Lucy's, but she hadn't finished it, so I covered it with a napkin and stowed it away for later like most of my meals since the beautiful blessing of motherhood. Okay, so maybe Jonah wasn't the one to blame for Lucy's sarcasm.

The dean looked at me as she tried to hide her disgust in my choice of leftover breakfast. “I'm not denying that Lucy is anything short of having character. I'm simply implying that her mannerisms in speaking are a little far too advanced for her peers.”

I laughed harshly as I pulled at my bagel. “Far too advanced for her peers? Mrs. Rhoades, isn't that why we're paying you the equivalent of an average American's annual income each month? So, that our children can become more advanced?” She was about to rebuttal, but I held up my hand to stop her as I started to walk away. “The beauty of Manhattan's children is their quick wit and culture. If that's missing then we've truly failed as parents.” I was already five paces ahead. “Good day, Mrs. Rhoades!” I waved my hand in the air as I quickly glanced over my shoulder. She'd finally stopped following after me.

“Dr. Cohen” My supervisor, Dr. Blumenfeld, sang disapprovingly as I waltz into the hospital. “Beepers are meant for emergencies, not for you to look at and ignore.”

“I'm sorry!” I swung my purse off of my shoulder and stuffed it into an empty locker. “Lucy's dean just wouldn't stop nagging at me this morning.”

“You're just a few months shy of finishing your Residency.” His eyebrow was perked up in concern. “I shouldn't have to remind you that patients are just as important as family.”

My back was turned towards my supervisor as I quietly mocked his words along with him.

I slipped on my white coat and headed towards the exam rooms where my eager patient waited. I was caught by surprise when I bumped into Sarah leaving the same exam room.

“Oh!” She chirped as I'd startled her. “You're here.” Sarah looked confused. “Blumenfeld asked me to see the patient since you were running late.”

I sighed loudly as I grabbed my forehead. “I hate when he does this! I was half a minute late!”

“Don't worry, it was just another teenager trying to get out of class.” Sarah smiled as she pranced into the nurses' triage.

“You're...Jonah Cohen's wife...aren't you?” I turned around to see two young high schoolers standing in the doorway. Their smiles were from ear to ear and filled with excitement from the now potential single degree between them and the host of the Late Night show.

“Maybe.” I swung my shoulders side to side. “Who's asking?”

“Dude, it's totally her!” The boy's tall skinny friend tried to convince him. “I've seen him with her before! It's totally her!”

“Shouldn't you boys be in school?” I picked up the chart for my next patient and looked over it as the boys quietly mumbled to one another.

“We have a free period right now. Well, not really “free” but we're trying to get stories for the school newspaper.”

I put the chart down and gave them a look. I knew exactly where this was going.

The boy's tall friend chimed in, “we're huge fans of Jonah! He's one of the reasons we're on the school paper! I've even already received early admission to Harvard, and I'm going to be on the Harvard Lampoon and the Crimson, just like Jonah!”

I snickered as I held my fingers over my mouth. Jonah was just a normal guy to me, so it always made me laugh when people reacted this way.

“He inspired me to start writing. His jokes when he hosted the ESPY's last year? And don't even get me started on how great he was at the Oscar's! Not just once, but twice! Oh and his show....”

“Okay, okay, okay...” I gestured for the boys to calm down. The nurses in the triage were starting to look our way, concerned. “What do you boy's want?”

“We just want to do a quick little interview with him!” The shorter boy begged.

His tall friend added, “or even just a quote will suffice!” The boy nudged his friend and scowled at him for so quickly diminishing their request.

I rested a hand on each of their shoulders as I walked them to the hospital's exit. “As long as you boys promise to say out of the hospital, I just might...” I dragged the would out in emphasis “...ask Jonah to pop into..”

“Park Lane Preparatory!” The boys could hardly contain their excitement. “Thank you, miss!”

“Doctor!” The taller boy corrected his little friend

Sarah laughed. “Those poor boys think you're actually going to send Jonah.”

I smiled as I picked up my chart and scanned over it again. “You're coming tonight, aren't you?”

“Yup!” Sarah leaned over the counter between us. “As soon as I pick up Henry and Jaime from the airport we will be there!”

“Right!” I closed the file lying in front of me and rested my elbow on the counter. “They're back from their honeymoon tonight, aren't they? How about the le boyfriend?” I wiggled my brows. She pushed herself away from the counter and began walking down the hall as I trailed after. “Another dud, huh?”

“You know, for so long every guy I dated wanted things to be a little more serious than I liked, but I was in love with the bachelor life, and now, now that I'm ready to settle down, I can't seem to find any of those guys anymore.”

“Don't worry S” I wrapped my arm around her in a side hug. “Candice from oncology is bringing her cousin Emerson. He's a total stud, and he just moved to the city!”

Sarah laughed as we parted ways down the hall.

It was well past five o'clock by the time I was done seeing patients and filling out paper work. I slipped off my coat and grabbed my purse out of the hospital's locker room. I still had a million errands to run before tonight's house warming party.

“Hello?” I called out as I entered the house. Lucy raced down the staircase as her grandmother tried to keep up.

“Mommy!” Lucy tackled my leg. I picked her up in my arms and kissed her.

“Thank you for staying so late Anna.”

“Anything for my sweet little pumpkin.” Anna and Lucy wrinkled their noses at one another. “I have to get going though.”

“Anna, when are you going to sell the Long Island house? You know Jonah and I want you here with us. I mean, besides Lucy's playroom, the whole third floor is empty!”

“That's sweet dear, but I feel it's easier on all of us if I'm just here during the week and back home on the weekends.”

“Nonsense!” I disagreed. “Nonsense!” Lucy mocked me.

Anna laughed at Lucy. “I'll think about it. Besides Marsha and the girls are coming over tonight.”

After Anna left, a chef came over to prepare dinner while I did a quick sweep of the house making sure things looked presentable. It didn't take too long since we just moved into the house a few weeks ago.

I was in my closet picking out a dress to wear when I yelped as I felt hands wrap around my waist. “Jonah!” I felt his mouth against my neck as he kissed me. “Jesus Christ, I didn't hear you come in.”

“How was your day, babe?” He asked as he pulled his shirt off and walked into the bathroom.

“So weird.” I finally decided on a dress and began undressing. “I'm convinced Lucy's dean is out for her. I'm usually able to dodge her, but we were running late today because someone kept her up past her bedtime last night.”

“Sorry not sorry. Thursday nights are Monty Python nights. It's a Cohen tradition!” Jonah shouted over the sound of running water.

“Anyway, that made me late to work and today just happened to be the day Blumenfeld had a stick up his ass. Like, I'm late half a minute, chill out!” I grunted as I pulled the dress over my head. “Don't get me started on the ridiculous work load for a Friday.”

Jonah walked back into the closet and helped me zip up my dress. “I'm sorry you had such a bad day.”

I turned around and looked at Jonah. Something looked off about him. He wasn't acting like his normal self. “What's going on?” I asked quietly

“Huh?” He pretended not to hear me.

I grabbed his chin and turned his head towards me. “What's going on?”

“Okay, okay, I didn't want to tell you this til later.” His energy level had quickly gone up. “But...” He squealed like a little school girl. “I got the Tonight Show!”

My jaw dropped. Jonah couldn't hide the gigantic smile on his face. “What!” I gasped as the words slowly caught up to me. “Oh my God! Jonah! That's amazing!” I squeezed him tightly between my arms. This was all Jonah wanted since he started his career.

“They haven't made the official announcement yet and there's still a shit ton of legal details Adam has to iron out with the network before everything is settled.”

“Holy shit!” I walked out of the closet and sat on the bench at the end of our bed. “Did you ever think we'd be here? You hosting THE talk show of talk shows, me being a doctor, us having a five year old, and living in a Brownstone that we designed ourselves?”

“Didn't I tell you?” Jonah sat next to me. “Before we got married and you were worried about the future, didn't I tell you it would all work out?”

I leaned in and kissed Jonah. “You did.”

The doorbell rang and I quickly threw on some jewelry before racing down the stairs.

Kadie and Adam were the first to arrive. “My favorite little niece is here!” I cheered as I took Olivia from her arms. She smiled as she sucked on her hand unaware of what was going on.

“Wow!” Kadie whispered as she looked around. “Y'all did a great job decorating.”

“Are you kidding? Neither one of us had time so we hired a decorator.” I laughed. “By the way, how was the launch?” Kadie's PR company had blossomed in the last few years. She opened her second national office in L.A. It wasn't until Jebrone and Adam partnered together to build their own law firm that Kadie's business grew as far as opening her first international office in London.

Kadie and I pulled up a couple of bar stools to the kitchen counter. “It was so unreal! I wish you could have been there. The office is just a block away from Darlington's.” I laughed at the irony.

Our guests started arriving one by one. Jonah and I gave everyone the grand tour of our beautiful new home. Since I graduated and started working, we agreed that it was time to start building a more permanent residence. Almost two years of staring at different shades of paint and finding the perfect marble top, we were finally able to move in.

It was getting late so I excused myself from the party and headed up to Lucy's room. She was already in bed waiting for me to tell her a bedtime story. Most of the time she'd talk herself to sleep. Jonah and I never understood how she'd come up with such bizarre stories, but they always kept us entertained.

“Mommy?” Lucy's voice sounded sleepy.

“Yes sweetie, I'm right here.” I closed the door behind me and laid next to her.

“Nana said daddy named me after a song. Is that true?” I smiled when I heard her question. Lucy already knew this, but she loved hearing it over and over.

“It is in fact true!” I tapped her nose and she giggled.

“Is it the song daddy sings when he takes me to the park and throws me in the air? I like that song”

“Mhmm...do you remember how it goes?”

She whispered quietly. “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.” She was already nodding off, but not until she got the full story. “But why mommy?”

“Well, before you were born daddy and I weren't sure if we were going to have a little baby boy or girl. We wanted it to be a surprise. We picked some names just in case, but it didn't matter because when daddy saw your eyes he was mesmerized. They were so big and beautiful. The doctor told us we had a little baby girl he put you in daddy's arms and daddy said, 'A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.'”

I gently kissed Lucy on the forehead and within seconds she was fast asleep.

As I tip toed out of the room I found Jonah standing in the corner of the doorway. He'd been listening in on our bedtime story.

“I love you” He whispered.

“I love you too”

  1. I actually was hoping you'd do something like this, a peek into their life. I liked it! I think the wedding was a great place to wrap things up, and I loved the flash forward, so I guess I'm not sure what the previous poster thinks was so horrible.
I love that Anna is keeping their daughter, and I love that Lucy has Jonah's witty personality.
I'm going to miss this blog!! Keep us in the loop with what's going on with you!

It's gonna be so weird to not transfer all those ideas to writing. :( Who knows, maybe I'll throw in a blog post here and there for those readers that choose to come back every now and then! :)

Thanks for writing and good luck on your future endeavors :)!

  7. I am disappointed that we didn't get to read about the first time Lynne and Jonah held their daughter
..or the way they survived sleepless nights even just a little. Lynne did come across as a little snobby....but I can also understand being in a hurry.

    2. Thanks for clarifying, makes sense! I completely understand you didn't mean it in any sort of bad way. It reminds me a little of the "asians are good at math" stereotype - it's not meant to offend anyone, but I guess I've seen enough bad generalizations to make me wary of any at all. 9. So I also thought a lot of the comments she said came out a little snobby like the money and decorating and the big house whole floor they don't use etc.
However I think the point was to show how they made it big and their dreams came true, it is fiction and it's not meant to be real. Hell she could have said she became a princess, it's a story!

    1. Ashley,

If you give them reality, they want rainbows and butterflies. If you give them rainbows and butterflies, they want reality. You really have to have some thick ass skin to be a blog writer.

Thank you so much for your support and being on this journey! As of right now there won't be another time jump. I figured I wanted things to "wrap" up and I couldn't quiet do that without jumping a few years ahead. More than likely the next post will be in the "5 years later" realm

    2. You're welcome! Your blog has been a wonderful read, and a nice break from reality and the drama of most blogs.

Hmmm. Okay, that should be interesting. I'm really not sure what the next blog post will bring as this one wrapped things up pretty well. The only reason I thought another time jump might be useful is to see how their relationship, as well as how their roles as parents, progressed.

  16. I really liked this wrap-up post, and Lynn seems like a very devoted mom to an adorable, precocious daughter, but WOW did she have an attitude--not even talking about the dean, who was a dumbshit, but when she was at work, mocking her supervisors? Ew. Maybe it comes with motherhood, ha.

Zara, thanks so much for such a good story! I've been reading this blog since the beginning and I've enjoyed almost every step of the way. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

    1. PS Lucy is the CUTEST name for a little girl.

    2. I don't think it's a motherhood thing. I think it comes with the type of job you have maybe, or just how you handle stress maybe?

A few friends of mine are either residents now, or married someone who is. The mocking of the supervisor, comes from reality. I've heard so many stories about what residents go through during rotations and such. They are overworked, hassled for stupid shit (my friend got it in front of the entire nursing staff, because the attending felt she took too long to go to the bathroom!), and a lot of their attendings have major attitudes. It's almost like a right of passage. They all rolled their eyes and mocked their attendings as well when they felt they were being ridiculous. Almost when you're having a bad day, and someone hassles you for something and you feel "really!? over THAT!?"

I'll cop to it. I work in law. There are days when the associate I work for asks me to do STUPID shit just because he's copping the whole "I'm better because you're a lowly assistant and that's what you're here for" and I've waited til he left my desk and I've given him the finger.. It totally happens. lol

      Delete
    3. It sucks, yeah, and I've worked in very, very high stress industries before (I used to be a futures broker) where I had urges to act out multiple times a day, but still--it's really unprofessional and makes you look quite immature. I don't really think anything is an excuse to act like that in the workplace--if you can't handle that kind of stress, you need to find a new industry.

    4. I guess I didn't do a great job portraying it by the looks of everyone's comments, but, it's really a mix of having a bad start to the day and being in a stressful setting. Yes, she came off not as her normal self but people change over the course of years. No, she didn't turn into a bitch, just someone who's in a high-stress position and doesn't have time for nonsense during business hours. I guess everyone deals with it differently.

Thank you both so much for tuning in each week to be a part of Lynn's world! :)

  17. Lots of loose ends tied up here! I have to agree with the majority of the posters, I was completely turned off by the conversation with the dean and my first feeling was disappointment that you'd turned her into a rude, entitled physician (eye rolling, mocking, etc...) in the five years we skipped ahead. The interaction with the attending didn't help that perception - she was late after being paged, she should own it. It wasn't until later when she was with her friends that glimpse of the Lynn we've been reading about for so long showed herself. I was thankful for that!

Love, love, love the story of how Lucy got her name. That was super sweet. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Just my opinion, not a fan of the 5 year jump. I wanted a bit more of a comedic approach.
I like how you brushed up on most of the group, but for the last one, I'd love the post to be just about Jonah and Lynn as a couple. Maybe some sexy time on a annevasary. So on so fourth.

Hate how everyone's bitching on here though. If you guys want to read a fuller ending, I suggest picking up a bloody book. This is a blog, not a memoir. So calm your shit people.

    Jonah's POV would be AMAZING.

    1. Michelle,

I have to admit, it took some back and forth between a 5-year jump and a more comedic approach to end the story. I figured everyone would be able to rest easy knowing how things worked out for everyone in the future.

Who knows, maybe the next post might end with tears of...laughter? :p

    2. Wasn't complaining! :) I'm glad you wrote about everyone's future. Would've bloody sucked if the story ended on her being pregnant. And I'm glad you didn't write about the baby years, just because it would've more of a stressful "environment", especially with Lynn still doing med.

And can I just say that I'm SOO glad that you're sticking up for your work to some of the haters above. Don't worry about the irrelevant negativity, you're a great writer. Much love.

    3. Oh no! I didn't think you were (: That's another reason I chose to go with the jump! I thought as readers it would be nice to see the "turn out" rather than the "during" stages...if that makes sense lol

  23. Laura, I guess sometimes as a writer you get so involved in what you're writing that it's easy to forget that your readers may not be following along. For me, personally, I didn't see Lynn as being snobby. The first half of Lynn's day was suppose to come off as stressful. First Lucy's dean is nagging on Lynn because of this Lynn is late for work where her supervisor gives her trouble, Blumenfeld signs over Lynn's patient to Sarah as a consequence, and a short work day gets dragged out with paper work, not to mention all she has to do to prepare for her house warming party. We all know that if a tiny thing goes wrong in the beginning of the day it just kinda sets the mood for the rest of the day. And that's what I was trying to portray. Yes, Lynn's life is made, but the struggles are still real. Hope that clears up the confusion!

  24. I've never commented, but have been a reader from the beginning. I did pick up on the Dean being over the top nit picky and was glad Lynn stuck up for her daughter. I loved everything about this post. I would love to hear about Connor and Woody. I was bummed 5 years later, Sarah is still solo, while everyone else was married, but that does give the story a little bit of reality.

Your writing has been fantastic and I've loved reading every Tuesday and Thursday :) thank you for sharing such a talent with all of us.

  26. Can't believe it's ending!!! Going to miss this blog so much. What will Thursday be without a Lynm-Jonah update?!

My thoughts on this post are mixed though. I did also think Lynn was being a bit harsh at the beginning. But reading your explanation of the situation, Zara, and re-reading the post gave me a clearer understanding. Another thing I had a problem with was the amount of time that had passed. Five years seems a bit too short to me personally for this level of success to be attained. The "Tonight Show" and a brownstone and 3 PR offices - it all seems like a lot. But other than that, I love that Lynn and Jonah are still going strong.

And I would love to get a glimpse of Lucy's future, possibly in NY or not. She might want to explore the South and find herself a country boy who happens to be Lynn's ex's son!!! Drama!

But seriously, thank you so much for keeping us entertained for so long. You are a wonderful writer.

    1. Bose,

I thought, as I was writing the scene, that it would come off as the dean being picky, but now after seeing everyone's reaction I realize I could have been a little more descriptive. You know, a few readers have said they found the tonight show offer a little unrealistic, but I actually based that off of Jimmy Fallon's transition lol He really did go from the late show to the tonight show in five years. But, at the same time I didn't write much about Jonah's career before he met Lynn for that connection of his success to be made. So that one's on me! And I agree brownstones and three PR offices in five years is a little cray, but I had to give my peeps a happy ending haha

Look at you with your creative thoughts! I like where you're going Hm...maybe you could write a spin off with Lucy as a teen! I would totally approve (and read) this!

Thank you Bose, I've enjoyed having readers like you. Ones that very fairly challenge my imagination! It's been a sincere pleasure! Please continue to stop by for updates on new projects :)

  28. So sad that this blog is ending, but thanks for taking the time to keep me entertained with your writing skills.

I would have loved a post about the birth of Lucy, how Conner is doing and Sarah and Woody getting together. But those are just my preferences.

All the best in your career!

    1. Aw Em, I was a little sad reading your comment. You've been one of my biggest cheerleaders along the way. Can you please continue to do so? I need you to just always read and comment on any thing and everything I write! Seriously, it's such an ego booster :) I love ya and all your kind words you've shared :)

  29. Only one request: I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear what happens with... REBECCA! Really! It would be a tough write, though. Obviously the audience doesn't want to find her on top of the world, but don't make it too depressing. Maybe she learned from her mistakes?

    1. Ohhh, Maudie ^^^ ! Forgot about that guy/his band!!! That would be cool to see where they are now!

I am so sad the blog is ending. As far as criticism from everybody^, I don't think there will EVER be an amazingly good ending to a blog that readers have felt so invested in for so long. We are all sad it's going to be over! It is what it is. I might not personally love certain aspects of these finals posts, but I am SO grateful Zara is even giving us an ending to round out Lynn and Jonah's story. I can only imagine how daunting of a task that would be as a writer to try and hit every single loose end and then to finally finish the blog story. So let's give Zara some credit where it's due. *mic drop*

  35. I love this blog and have followed it since the beginning. I didn't think Lynn was being bitchy, I thought she was sticking up for her baby girl. She's sassy, and anything less would've been disappointing. I'll miss reading this blog, but wish you all the best! I cannot wait to see what you have up your sleeve next! Xoxo
