When You're Ready, Come And Get It

“You've got to be fucking kidding me!”

It was Saturday afternoon and Jaime and I were standing on a terrace over looking Manhattan. Kadie and Adam had just arrived to their engagement party and were making rounds to greet their guests. I was doing my best to be a great hostess by guiding everyone from the private dining hall and outdoors to enjoy drinks and h'oeuvres.

I had fallen stale when Jaime spotted Jonah entering the room with Kylie. He took a sip of his drink, with raised eyebrows, and spun himself around to face me. “He actually brought her? Didn't he get the hint??”

“Obviously not.” I mumbled with a smile as I gestured for a group of guests to help themselves.

“What did he tell you exactly?” Jaime asked as he scanned the room again trying to get a good glimpse of the two.

Earlier in the afternoon I came to the venue to make sure everything was getting done on time. Jaime came to help me, because he knew how stressed out I was, and in between snapping my fingers at the caterers and directing the decorators I'd briefly gone over the incident with Jonah and I.

A waiter walked past us with a tray of champagne. I grabbed a glass, took a chug, and turned back to Jaime. “He said they aren't dating, just getting to know each other.” I rolled my eyes. “Whatever, it's not like I even care. I told him to move on any way.”

I spotted my parents and Kadie's mom entering the room. I smiled and waved them over. They had arrived the night before, so we decided to have a “welcome to the family” dinner with Adam's family. It was a night full of laughter and (happy) tears. And it was exactly what I needed to keep my mind off of Jonah and Kylie. For some reason I couldn't get the mental image of them making out, out of my head. Yuck.

“Jaime!” My mom squealed as she grabbed his face and kissed his cheek. He had the biggest smile. He hugged her back and held out his hand for my dad to shake.

My dad rejected it and went in for a hug. “How's my boy doing?” He asked Jaime.

His cheeks flushed pink like a little school girl as he responded back to my dad. He loved my parents even more than his own. And they loved him just as much.

I stood in the background grimacing. “This will never not be weird.”

“Why? They were totally my friends first.” Jaime said, to which my parents high fived him.

It was mid-afternoon when all of the guests had finally arrived. Social hour was almost over and lunch was just about ready to be served.

“Lynn! Everything turned out amazing! Thank you!”

“Oh, thanks, it just took hours of listening to you plan the entire thing, but sure I'll take credit.” I let out an irritated sigh.

“Are you...” Before Kadie could finish her question Jaime interrupted her by hissing like a cat and nudging his head to the side. Kadie looked over to see Kylie. “Oh. So, he brought her.”

“Of course he brought her. Why wouldn't he bring her? It's not like we're a thing anymore.” I spoke so quickly I could hardly make out the words I'd said.

“Whoa” Kadie grabbed me by the shoulders. “I know everything's been stressful lately, but it's done and we're here now. So, let's just relax and enjoy today.”

I agreed with Kadie and took a deep breath to calm myself. Jaime helped me as I rallied everyone to come back inside and have a seat. I gave a short toast to Kadie and Adam. Jebrone and Sarah said a few words, as well as some of Adam's friends. And just as we were coming to an end, Jonah decided to get up and say a few words.

“Hi everyone” He casually held his drink in his hand. “For those of you who don't know me, I'm Jonah Cohen. I've known Adam for a few years now and he's quickly become like a brother I never had.”

The room filled with collective “aww's”

“I may be the handsome younger brother with the great personality and wits” He curled up his mouth in a half smile as he waited for everyone to finish laughing. “But, like a younger brother I still find myself consumed with jealousy. Not because of the way Adam and Kadie look at each other, but because of the way he continues to look at her even when she isn't paying attention. Love is a hard thing to come by my brother, but you've captured it and for that you're truly lucky. Mazel Tov!” He raised up his glass.

“That was totally aimed at you.” Sarah, who was sitting a few seats away from me, leaned over and whispered loudly.

Kadie, Jaime, Henry, and Jebrone nodded their heads in agreement.

It was late in the afternoon by the time everyone was finally done eating. Once Kadie and Adam had thanked everyone for coming people began to slowly leave, while others continued to socialize.

I had only greeted Jonah and Kylie when they first arrived, but hadn't gotten a chance to actually talk to either one. When I saw Kylie slip away to the rest room I decided to make a beeline for Jonah.

I crouched down next to Jonah's seat. “Hey, Jon.”

“Hey, Lynn” Jonah smiled. “Everything turned out great.”

“Thanks. Was that speech about me?”

Jonah laughed timidly. “Never straight forward when you need to be, am I right?”

“Why are you suddenly playing these mind games with me?” My voice was loud enough to grab the attention of those sitting around Jonah.

He pushed out his chair and stood up, excusing himself from the conversation he'd been having with Adam's family. He gestured for me to follow him. We walked to the back of the room where a huge column blocked off our view from the party, giving us some privacy.

“Is this about Kylie?” He looked down at me. I avoided eye contact by looking at the crowds of people in the background. “Lynn, look at me.” He lifted my chin up so that we were making eye contact. “You told me you wanted space. More than once I might add.”

“And you told me you'd be there when I was ready.” I mumbled back to him, scared that I was finally admitting it out loud.

“What are you trying to say?” He whispered back.

Jonah's hands grazed my body and the feeling was all too familiar. I closed my eyes as nostalgia took over. My hands ran up his chest and cradled his face. He pushed my hair behind my ear and held onto my neck. “Are you sure you want to do this?” His breath tingled my skin and sent a chill down my spine.

I opened my eyes to stare into his. My grip tightened as I pulled him into my body. Before I could answer, I jolted back to reality at the sound of Kylie's scream. “You BITCH!”

    1. I can see why you would say that however jonah and Kylie weren't exclusive so for her to scream "you bitch!" Is on the edge of kinda crazy, as an adult if you saw the guy you went on 1 1/2 dates with about to kiss someone else you would be upset and mad because you know the other woman but scream and call names to make a scene is ridiculous. She should have walked over to them and confronted them like an adult so no sorry I don't think poor Kylie.

  6. I love your writing, but I've never understood the thing between Lynn and Jonah. I don't feel there is any chemistry at all between them.

    1. Oh my gosh - they have oodles of chemistry! I must be reading something different, because I have an entirely different opinion.

    2. Oh please you have no justification for your comment, go back and read. Your probably just making that up because you're not on his team

    3. Anonymous you're very defensive over a FICTIONAL blog. I've said my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Not everybody has to like the same character as you. Perhaps you should find some other hobbies to fill out your day instead of bitching about readers who don't share your views. Get over it, this is simply a MADE UP STORY. Duh.

  7. Lynn could have avoided this by telling Kylie they had a thing when she asked. I'm glad they are back. But Kylie's feelings didn't have to get hurt in the process. She did the same thing to Connor.

  8. Yay!!!!! About time, now just make them stay together.

  9. Whoa kylie definitely overreacted.

  10. As terrible as this sounds, I kind of lol'd when Kylie screamed at them. However, I agree with the above poster: Everything could have been avoided if Lynn had told Kylie about her and Jonah in the first place. She needs to take the feelings of others into consideration sometimes. That being said, Team Jonah!!!! I hope they are able to stay together drama-free (hopefully and refreshingly) for at least a while.

  11. Kylie and Jonah just met. They aren't dating and this is the second time they've ever hung out so the screaming really isn't necessary. I get that her feelings can be hurt but she really has no reason to be upset.

    1. I don't think it is the second time they've hung out. Lynn bowed out of the exercise group for several weeks to help with the engagement party. Jonah and Kylie had plans for drinks before that. They've likely been seeing each other, albeit casually, for a couple of weeks at least.

  12. Does anyone else agree that Kylie had every right to be upset? She was Jonah's date.... That said YESSSSS #TeamJonah

    1. You don't cause a scene at someone else's engagement party, upset or not. Something tells me Kylie is just getting started.

Kylie should be upset with Jonah, she's getting played like a two dollar fiddle.

    2. Maybe they were out of the way enough that people didn't notice Kylie. It does say that Josh and Lynn went to the back and were blocked from view. Maybe

  13. I think Kylie is immature for causing a scene at this engagement party... seriously immature. BUT, like the others said, Lynn should have just spilled when Kylie first asked. That said, Kylie had to know that something was going on with Jonah and lynn, she picked up on it when Jonah first showed up but she chose to ignore it and go after him anyway. Girls like Kylie bug me because they're men chasers... they go after guys no matter what.
Hopefully this will end without ruining the party, but either way Lynn's friends are fiercely loyal (which I LOVE) so I'm sure they'll get things under control quickly.

  14. I can definitely see why Kylie is upset, because Lynn gave no indication about her feelings for Jonah or that they used to be a thing, but he and Kylie are like, a nanosecond into their friendship, so byeeeeee Kylie!

  15. Kylie needs to settle down....she had to have been blind not to notice there was something going on between Jonah and Lynn.

  16. Come on Lynn and Jonah!!! Finally! I hope Kylie disappears soon and we can see Lynn and Jonah be happy together!

  17. I read that speech over and over. How was that about Lynn? It seemed to be about Katie and Adam. I wish there had been more of a hidden message like "that kind of love never dwindles" or something like that. That i could have seen it being about Lynn.
And Lynn could have waited till another day to tell Jonah how she felt doing that when he was on a date is pretty rude to the other girl. If I went on a date and caught the guy all over another girl, I'd feel stupid and probably over react too, but at least toward the guy.

    1. I agree, be mad at Jonah, but also be mad at Lynn. I'm glad they're working it out (YAY!), but Lynn knew they were there together, and that there were feelings (no matter how fresh and ridiculous) on Kylie's end, if not on Jonah's. And I would expect better of a friend, even a new one.

And as to Kylie focusing entirely on Lynn, there are those girls who will always always always be mad at the other woman before the guy, no matter what. Kylie is absolutely one of those girls, it was obvious from the first time she caught sight of Jonah and dropped Lynn like a bad habit.

And all of what I just said aside, I'm not sorry to see her go. :)

    2. I think the part where he says, "Not because of the way Adam and Kadie look at each other, but because of the way he continues to look at her even when she isn't paying attention." is meant to be about Lynn. I believe it's alluding to when Lynn started dating Connor and Jonah was still waiting for Lynn anyways. (ie. Lynn looked away when she dated Connor, but Jonah never did).

This is a poor explanation, but I hope it helps! lol

    3. Last Anon, your explanation was good! I didn't even think of that, but it's very true! When I first read his speech I thought the part "Love is a hard thing to come by my brother, but you've captured it and for that you're truly lucky." Was indirectly about Lynn and jonah. The fact that he's fallen in love with Lynn but isn't able to capture her attention. I don't know, maybe my explanation is bad lol!

  19. Sometimes we act irrational when passion and love are involved so I don't think lynn was trying to not think of Kylie 's feelings I just think she was caught up in the moment, when you're in love what else matters hold on to it. You'll mature by hopefully trying to apologize, not for doing it but for getting Kylie caught in it. Reading Lynn and jonah possibly step closer to getting together makes my day, I know writers want to have characters break up or cheat or whatever because it's drama but please get them together it's the perfect romantic comedy and I want a happy ending! Haha

  20. Lynn should have told Kylie originally & I think Jonah used Kylie as well. I'd be mad at both if I was Kylie. That said, that's rude to call her out like that at an engagement party, unless it was Kylie's (& Jonah). Say something to Lynn yes but not cause a scene.
But I agree-bye Kylie. Hello Jonah & Lynn. Lynn needs to ( once again) say what she wants & go for it (Jonah !)

  23. About time she and Jonah were back together - what's wrong with a blog about happiness?!!!!

  24. I'm gonna have to disagree with some of the comments that are putting blame on Lynn for hurting Kylie. Ok yes she should have said she and Jinah had a history, but it was also not any of Kylie's business. I think Jonah should feel bad for using Kylie as some sort of pawn to finally get Lynn to make a decision. He brought her to the party. He should be insulted. But also Kylie need sto calm down. OTT much? And also - yeyness! They're finally back together!

    1. Agreed. Jonah is so transparent its pathetic. Obviously if he's choosing to go to such an emotional place with Lynn while his date is in the bathroom he's not that into Kylie. For knowing Lynn so well he had to know she was affected by them starting to "date". The considerate thing to do, and what a guy who had no ulterior motives would have done, is not bring a date to this engagement party in the first place. He hasn't even been on enough dates with Kylie to know if he likes her yet. I'm not even talking about in consideration of Lynn, I'm talking in consideration of Adam and Kadie to assure any potential awkwardness would be avoided.

  25. Don't like the way Lyn is acting. Expecting Jonah to always wait for her while she goes off.
